How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game that involves betting between players. The aim is to build the best possible five-card hand from your two personal cards and the community cards on the table. You can also try to deceive your opponents by bluffing, though this is more difficult. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck.

The game is played in rounds, with one player acting as the dealer and others calling or raising each round. A player may choose to fold his or her hand if the stakes seem too high, losing any money they have already put into the pot. Alternatively, they can say “call” to match the highest bet made in that round. If they raise a call, this is known as a “check-raise”.

Once the betting round is complete the dealer deals three cards face up on the board, which anyone can use to make their best hand. This is called the flop.

The next betting round begins, with players raising or folding as usual. If they call, the player must match the bet made by the previous active player (or their blind).

Once the final betting round is over the dealer puts a fifth community card on the board, which again can be used by anyone. The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot. A royal flush is the highest, consisting of a King, Queen, Jack, and Ace of the same suit.
