What Is a Slot?

A slot is a specific area in a game in which you can store items. It is usually rectangular and can be accessed from a number of places on the screen, including the inventory and map. There are several types of slots in a video game, each with its own uses and functions. For example, one type of slot is a save slot that allows you to save the state of your game when you exit the program or lose connection. Another is a quest slot, which is used to store progress on a series of missions.

A slot is also a position in an airport runway or terminal, or in air traffic control where an airline can land and take off. Airlines compete to secure these slots, which are used when an airport is constrained by runway capacity or terminal space. Air traffic managers use flow management to assign slots to airlines, which in turn allocate their aircraft to the appropriate positions. This can result in huge savings in terms of delays and fuel burn, and has major environmental benefits. Those same air traffic management systems will soon be used to assign slots for many other kinds of transport, including trains and cars, creating massive savings in terms of congestion, delays, and fuel.
