A slot is a container for executing a single operation in a pipeline. In VLIW computers, it also refers to a unit of execution.

A person can insert cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode into a slot on the machine to activate it. A button, either physical or on a touchscreen, then activates reels that spin and rearrange symbols in combinations. When a winning combination appears, the player earns credits based on a pay table.
