HANOVER EXCHANGE

CLUB DEDICATES

BENCHES TO PARK

Pictured (l-r) in the attached photo from the dedication are:  Warren Wentz; Bob Channell; Ed Temple; Dwight Wintrode, Club President; Barb Metzler; Bob Kirk; George Hubbard and Gary Brown.

The Exchange Club of Hanover donated two park benches to Codorus State Park.  The benches were recently installed at the classroom area of the park.  The benches were dedicated on August 21 with Warren Werntz, Park Manager; Barb Metzler, representative for State Senator Mike Waugh; and club members in attendance.  The benches were funded by proceeds from the club's Builder's Home and Garden Show.

WE HAD A BLAST!!

The FRIENDS OF CODORUS STATE PARK 2012 Codorus Blast weekend was once again packed with recreation, education, entertainment, crafts and great food. This year’s record attendance was proof that there was “something for everyone”.

New to the Blast this year was our Family Fun Area complete with water wars, a laser tag arena and rock wall climbing. Professional woodcarving, fire prevention demonstrations, and fun entertainment filled the weekend’s schedule.

Musical entertainment included Pentagon, returning again this year for our Friday evening attendance. Not intimidated by the rain, the Band Shell area was dotted with umbrellas and rain jackets as their music was enjoyed by all. We welcomed for the first time Philadelphia Avenue with their soft acoustic sounds on Saturday afternoon. Richie
Fields, personable Nashville Recording Artist was a hit for our Saturday evening crowd
playing before and after the greatest fire works display in the area. Sunday afternoon
we enjoyed Kix Brooks sharing his talents in a relaxed country atmosphere.

F & S Yamaha and Marine was on site again this year offering free pontoon boat rides.  Our guests loved having a chance to relax and enjoy the view from the water. For a small donation the Kayak program offered our visitors the opportunity to paddle the cove of the Main Launch Area. For those preferring an aerial view of the lake, helicopter
rides were available.

The Keystone Dock Dog’s once again gave spectators an exciting show daily during the Big Air Wave, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieve competitions. Not only did our furry friends arrive to compete, but local athletes showed up in record numbers for our Saturday morning triathlon in the park.

Things were a bit “wild” in the Nature Tent as we learned about the art of falconry, local fish, ospreys and eagles in the park. We also heard about bats in peril. Bob, The Critter Guy gave willing hands a “hands on experience”. Guess what, snakes aren’t slimy as our younger crowd thought…they’re smooth and soft! The Bugman with “I got Bugs” showed us the world of nocturnal insects with the help of ultra violet lights.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW

WEBSITE.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our new website.  As you can see, we have made some big changes to our site.  Changes that we think will be more helpful, more useful and way more informative for everyone who chooses to keep up with what's happening at Codorus State Park and the Friends Group.

We put a lot of thought into the development of our new site.  One consideration stood out from all the rest.  We wanted to provide our members and the people from our local community who routinely assist us with as much information as possible about what FOCSP is doing here at the Park on an ongoing basis.

We knew this was an important consideration because we rely heavily on our members and our many local supporters.  Wonderful people who help us through their generous monetary donations and the volunteering of their time for the numerous events & activities offered throughout the year at the Park.  We feel certain that keeping our main group of people better informed will better help us in the long run.

While contemplating our site content, we thought alot about who else might have an interest in hearing about what we are doing.  We quickly realized that one answer was our campground visitors.  We are trying very hard not to miss or forget about ANYONE who comes to this Park.  And, we certainly did not want our beloved campers to feel left out of our endeavors.

It's amazing when you think about all the thousands of different campers who have stayed at the Park campground over the years.  People who have come here from all walks of life.

Some families are local and visit us many times during the camping season while other families live further away and visit us only once or twice a season.  Then you have another core group of campers who come for a visit from very far away.  A popular 1970's expression would describe these people perfectly; 'Just Passin Thru.'

Everyone who visits the Park, whether they are campers, boaters, hikers, bikers, hunters, fisherman, etc. all have Park information needs.  But, these needs are all different from the needs of our members and supporters.  They are directly related to what activity has drawn them to the Park in the first place.  To provide people with information to this degree is a daunting challenge for us to take on, to say the least.

As our site develops, we expect to continue our efforts to identify and add new content that helps ALL our Park visitors locate their essential needs and find out about upcoming events/attractions happening in the area.

Please enjoy our website.  Should you have any questions, comments, suggestions for improvement or ideas for future upgrades, or if you would like to volunteer to manage/maintain this website for FOCSP, please don't hesitate to let us know.  Contact us.

FOCSP HELPS THE PARK

During FOCSP's May Board of Directors meeting, Warren Werntz presented numerous purchasing requests for items he and his staff needs to run the Park.  By a unanimous vote, the Directors approved every one of Warren's requests that totaled somewhere in the range of about $12,000.

Some of Warren's requests included a new "shade" curtain system for the Band Shell, a specialized lighting system that will be used during the Blast and Halloween programs to make darkened areas more safe for our Park visitors, waterway buoys and a set of tires for the Maintenance Department's skid loader.

Needless to say, Warren was beaming with joy and gratitude as he expressed his sincere appreciation to the FOCSP Board for their generosity.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Budget cuts continue to be a reality facing Park Managers in all of PA's Park systems.   Simply put, the State does not have the money to allocate all the funds that are necessary to efficiently and effectively run a Park operation.

Our dedicated group of volunteers understand this dilemma.  We see the need and want to help Codorus State Park, Warren, the Park staff and the general community, anyway we can.

It's too bad that ALL of our FOCSP volunteers didn't get to witness the expression on Warren's face when he realized what had just been accomplished; priceless!

KIX BROOKS IS COMING

TO CODORUS
As a result of extraordinary efforts taken by both FOCSP and WGTY FM 107.7 radio station, it was announced that Kix Brooks will perform on the final day of the Codorus Blast Festival in the Park event.  This intimate and more personal concert with Kix will be on Sunday, June 24th at 2:00 PM.

There is no special fee involved.  Your $5 program entry donation  entitles you to take part in the concert experience.  For more information, visit the Blast website or Blast Facebook page (Codorus Blast Festival in the Park).

HALLOWEEN PROGRAM IS

A HUGE SUCCESS!

Website_Story_Picture.jpg

The stars finally aligned for the group of dedicated volunteers who make Halloween in the Park.  The committee clearly got to see the future potential of this program when they get both nights in.  The place was packed....both nights!  Warren estimated the crowds to be about 5000 people each night.

Halloween In The Park is all about children and their families.  And, the 2012 event didn't let them down.  In addition to the usual sites and sounds, the trick or treat area and the hayride area, this year the kids had a chance to meet someone very special.  Yes, Smokey Bear honored us all with his presence.

We've posted some pictures of volunteers in action in our PHOTO section of this website.  For more extensive event coverage, please visit www.halloweeninthepark.org.

Leroy_Drowning.jpg

Oh, we almost forgot.  Last year, we dealt with a snow storm and except for a few tent issues, we made out pretty good.  But, this year we dealt with a hurricane named Sandy that wasn't so good for our lake monster named Leroy. The good news is Leroy made the front page of two local newspapers.  The bad news is Leroy may not return in 2013 because of the damage.  Many people seem to love and expect having Leroy on the lake.  We're all hoping to find people who will step up and help bring Leroy back to life.

HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK

2012 SET UP ACTIVITIES

ARE NOW UNDERWAY

Dwight Resh and John Lockwood install the sign located at the Oarhouse.  As you drive down Rt. 216, you will notice the large orange pumpkin signs and the large Halloween In The Park Banner along the shoreline.  A big thank you goes to these two men plus Rick Stover, Rick Bealing, Jim Sanders and Bob Maher.  A job well done fellows!

And, while he didn't get his picture taken, a big thank you goes to Ken Miller who stayed back at Pine Tree to build our lighting towers.

Guess who is about to make an appearance next?

MAKE YOUR HALLOWEEN

CAMPSITE RESERVATIONS

NOW!

Camper_s_Registration_Article.jpg

FOCSP is now focusing their attention toward the 2012 Halloween in the Park program.  FOCSP President, Becky Miller has  mailed the paperwork packages to all of last year's event campers so they have an advanced opportunity to secure their same campsite again for this years' event.  The cut off date for this advanced reservation timeframe is August 1, 2012.  If you have not taken the time to rent your site, please take the time to do so NOW because after August 1st, all sites not reserved will made available to the general public on a first come, first serve basis.  Hurry, the sites are going FAST.

A VISIT FROM ABE

Abraham Lincoln (James Getty) kindly honored us with his presence at our 2012 Spring Fling event.  His unique 1860's performance was remarkable and enjoyed by all who attended the event.  While listening to his answers from the many questions asked by the audience, it really felt like you were talking to good ole' Abe.  If you haven't seen his presentation yet, make a point to do so.  It is well worth it!

LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP

AWARD

During the 2012 Spring Fling event, Becky Miller, FOCSP President, presents Dick and Eleanor Stoner a Friends of Codorus State Park Lifetime Membership card.  The award was given to the Stoner's as recognition for the many years of service they both have given to the Friends Group and the Park.

CODORUS CLEANS UP

DSCN1125.jpg

So that volunteers have the opportunity to help get Codorus State Park ready for the upcoming season, a Spring Clean Up Event is organized every year by the Park in early April.  This year's event saw many people get involved by volunteering their time to assist Warren and the Park staff in numerous activities going on throughout the Park.  We hope Dan Clark did replace that bathroom's old, worn out water heater laying there on the ground.  Otherwise, the showers may be a bit cold this year for everyone if he didn't.

THE CAMPGROUND IS NOW

OPEN

CSP_Campground_Sign_2012.jpg

At 3PM on April 13th the Codorus State Park campground officially opened the 2012 camping season.  The Park staff did a great job getting everything ready.  Do you remember last year's Halloween program snow storm?  They had a mess on their hands to deal with.

All of last year's campground hosts are back too and now everyone is ready for another enjoyable Codorus camping season.

Closed_Outpost_Store_Picture.jpg

The Campground opening also coincides with the re-opening of FOCSP's Outpost Store and Gift Shop for the 2012 season.  The store's shelves are stocked.  The wood sheds are full.  And, there's plenty of ice in our ice machine too.  We're ready, now let's bring on the campers and visitors!
